Not a Weekend Job: Day Four at the European Defense Tech Festival

The European Defense Tech Festival closed on Sunday with its focus on the human layer of defence tech: hostile-environment trainers, front-line medics, and a Ukrainian accelerator that put its own numbers on stage. The sharpest talk of the week, from Defence Builder's Vladyslav Berehovyi, reduced four days of pitches to one verb, validate, and one warning: spare parts, not features, decide whether you stay deployed. The European Defense Tech Festival closed on Sunday the way it opened on Thursday: in a hangar full of founders, with the weather outside still voting. Swiss Aerospace Ventures attended all four days; this is the final report, and it belongs to the human layer of defence tech, the people who train, patch up and speak for the operators every system on display is ultimately built around.

Security immunity as a service

The day opened not with a drone but with a workshop. Katerina Sergatskova of Daily Humanity Europe, Ukrainian journalist, ISO 31000-certified risk manager, twenty years in hostile environments from occupied Ukraine to the Middle East, has spent four years turning hostile-environment readiness into a product. More than 4,000 people trained, with clients running from Dow Jones, the New York Times and the BBC down to NGOs and SMEs; a four-step offer of threat study, HEAT/HEFAT training, equipment sourcing through a manufacturer network, and a risk-intelligence platform (MAIRA) that puts threat data, training records and live signals on one continuously updated graph.

Her reality-check slide deserves wider circulation than a workshop audience: most injuries near the combat zone come from artillery shrapnel and FPV drones, but un-intercepted missiles, reckless driving near the front and plain human unpredictability kill steadily too. It is a niche business model, survivability for the people who operate everything else at this festival, and a reminder that the supply chain of European defence now includes a human layer with its own vendors.

The same layer returned at midday in hardware form. AO-Med, an Estonian-registered team pitched by a field medic under the banner "we work at night (because of drones)," demonstrated a ruggedised tablet-based vitals monitor: pulse and blood pressure from sensors, SpO₂ via what the presenter cheerfully called a tricky sensor hack, respiration rate by algorithm. One device, four vitals, built for red-light casualty care where daylight evacuation is a drone target. The demo worked, no small distinction this weekend, and the ambition is unabashed: collect enough field data to predict trauma outcomes, then ride the dual-use wave into the back of every civilian ambulance.

The accelerator reads its own critique

The most anticipated session belonged to Vladyslav Berehovyi of Defence Builder, and it was the sharpest talk of the festival's four days.

His validation map alone justified the slot. In Ukraine, "validation" is not one door but four, and each gives something different: the state (MoD test institute, codification and NSN, admission to operation), the platforms (Brave1, Iron), the buyers (DOT-Chain Defence and brigade-level procurement), and the users themselves, combat units, volunteer integrators, unit R&D workshops. A certificate is not a contract, and a contract is not a field report.

Then came the slide titled "the five problems nobody puts in the brochure": validation is a date, not a status; feedback arrives by phone, not by report; grants do not equal integration, only around a quarter of granted systems ever reach a unit; the state is fast but its priorities are slow; and "battle-tested" has become a marketing word. That last admission, delivered from the ecosystem's own stage, is worth recording. So is the number: a ~25% grants-to-unit conversion rate is exactly the kind of figure the sector's success narrative has been missing.

The rest of the talk was a field manual. Testing is not an event but a permanent flow in R&D, because the adversary counters a new system in under three months and a field engineer in Ukraine is the fastest R&D input a European company can buy. Range demos and frontline use obey "different physics, different truth." Operators change tactics faster than firmware ships. There is no NDA culture at the front, relationships carry the data, contracts do not. And the line of the festival: spare parts, not features, decide whether you stay deployed.

For investors he was equally blunt. What defence funds underwrite in 2026: orders, not grants; contracts, not LOIs; MRL beside TRL, expressed in units per month rather than the word "scalable"; a bill of materials, a margin, and a non-Chinese supply chain; a named buyer, a named budget line, a next contracting gate. What no longer works in a deck: "$2.7 trillion market, we take 1%," TRL 7 with no manufacturing plan, LOIs dressed as pipeline, grants dressed as revenue, a feature list instead of a procurement thesis. And a catalogue of investor red flags from Ukrainian experience, IP transfer as a funding condition, unclear LPs, requests for battlefield data, exclusivity attached to non-binding term sheets, that reads as the founder-side companion to the CELIS investment-screening paper flagged here yesterday.

Defence Builder's Batch 4 is now open to EU as well as Ukrainian teams with a working prototype: four months of validation, testing, legal readiness, capital and government relations, "Europe-facing by design." Judged against its own new standard, evidence over claims, verifiable status, do what you said in the timeframe you said, the programme has set itself a measurable bar. This publication will hold it there.

Validate against the mission, befriend the prime

The closing panel put a unit voice on stage: Mykyta Puz, Defence Industry Liaison Officer of Ukraine's 1st Corps NGU "Azov" (and supervisory board member of its technology vehicle, 4308.tech), alongside festival co-founder Benjamin Wolba of the European Defense Tech Hub and Eugenie Wirz of venture builder Bifrost Defence.

The message was a drumbeat: validate, validate, validate, and validate against the mission capabilities a ministry of defence has actually stated. Technology must map onto an existing capability requirement; the requirement will not bend to the technology. It is the demand-side mirror of the week's opening keynote on political readiness: a budget line needs a capability line to sit under.

The panel's most practical advice concerned primes. For a young company, the prime contractor is not the competition and not the exit, it is the best friend and, ideally, the first client. The tactic offered was memorably specific: find an angel among the primes, a single internal champion who pulls you into a programme. In a sector where procurement gates and framework contracts belong to the incumbents, one believer inside the fortress beats ten pitches at the gate.

Wind 3, drones 0

And the demos? The firefighting drone that lost to the wind on Friday returned with a "wind-compensated" drop system. The compensation was enthusiastic: this time roughly half the load landed on the opposite side of the target, against the wind direction. Undercorrection to overcorrection in one overnight patch, with the target untouched in between.

The failure is instructive rather than embarrassing. The team did exactly what hackathon culture rewards, iterate overnight, show up again, and the field returned the same verdict as the day before, because calibrating a drop model against real wind is weeks of instrumented flights, not one night of parameter tweaks. Building a startup, as one attendee put it, is not a weekend job. Berehovyi had said the same thing that morning in different words: testing is a permanent flow, not an event.

The more encouraging demo posture came from Rattlesnake, the last-fifty-metres visual detection system first seen on day two. Pushed indoors by the weather, the team showed a semi-working system and then did something rare: they challenged the audience to launch any drone and see whether it was detected. Adversarial testing, in public, on request, precisely the "ask for failures" culture the morning's talk had demanded. Detection was imperfect; the posture was not. On the alumni-tracking question this publication raised on Friday, Rattlesnake earned itself a second look.

Four days, one ledger

The festival's final score: the wind beat the drones three demonstrations to nil, the funding talks outnumbered the signed orders by a wide margin, and the most reliable systems of the weekend were the ones that carried their operating environment with them, a vitals monitor strapped to a human, a detection system indoors, a training curriculum in a classroom.

But the ledger has a credit side. One traceable exit (Lancelot, via the EDTH hackathon route, acquired two weeks before the festival). One accelerator willing to publish its own conversion problem. One unit liaison officer handing out business cards. And a closing consensus, from the state institute to the brigade to the venture builder, on a single verb, repeated until it stuck: validate.

The airfield where Europe's defence founders now demo drones was built in secret in 1934 to get around Versailles, hosted the first rocket-powered flights in 1937, and later flew Honecker's government jets. History does not repeat, but it rhymes, and at Neuhardenberg it rhymes loudly.
