On 20 July 2026, at Farnborough International Airshow, Anduril Industries and Archer Aviation unveiled Thunder: a Group 5 autonomous attack tiltrotor designed to fly alongside crewed military helicopters defensescoop.com. The model on the show floor is a full-size engineering baseline replica, with first flight targeted for 2027 shephardmedia.com. The announcement came exactly one month after a more consequential development: on 17 June 2026, the United States Air Force awarded production contracts to Anduril and General Atomics for Collaborative Combat Aircraft Increment 1, the first time any major military has committed to serial manufacture of fighter-class autonomous combat aircraft defensescoop.com. The two production aircraft are the General Atomics FQ-42A Dark Merlin and the Anduril FQ-44A Fury, both formally dropping the "Y" prototype prefix at the moment of contract award insideunmannedsystems.com.

The two events together are not coincidental. They define the shape of a market that is now real, funded, and moving toward European customers. If you are building autonomy software, perception systems, propulsion subsystems, or human-machine interface technology for defence applications, the architecture Anduril is demonstrating at Farnborough is the clearest public signal yet of where procurement demand is concentrating.


What Thunder Actually Is

Developed in partnership with Archer Aviation, Thunder is a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft built with a series hybrid-electric powertrain and tilt rotors that allow it to operate across environments while keeping pace, when needed, with rotary-wing platforms including the Apache and the MV-75 Cheyenne II 2 sources. Anduril President and Chief Strategy Officer Chris Brose stated the aircraft has been in development for approximately three years, and described it as a fully autonomous armed reconnaissance tiltrotor derived from lessons learned in the fixed-wing FQ-44A Fury programme defenseone.com.

The payload figures are substantial. According to Anduril's own press release, as independently quoted by multiple outlets, Thunder can carry up to 10 Hellfires, 16 air-launched effects, or four 19-shot pods holding 76 70mm laser-guided APKWS II rockets, or a mix thereof, on launchers that extend from either side of the main bay 2 sources. Air-to-ground missile options could include the AGM-114 Hellfire, AGM-179 Joint Air-to-Ground Missile, or Anduril's own Barracuda-100M twz.com.

The cost framing is deliberate. Brose described Thunder as costing "a fraction" of a Cheyenne or an Apache defenseone.com. The Cheyenne II he references is Bell's MV-75, the US Army's next-generation assault tiltrotor, officially named on 15 April 2026 at the Army Aviation Warfighting Summit army.mil. Shane Arnott, Anduril's SVP Programs and Engineering, said the partnership with Archer gives Anduril "the ability to get a price point that just isn't achievable any other way," with the explicit intent of enabling Thunder to be fielded at scale twz.com. Arnott also noted that Thunder reused technology from Archer's Midnight eVTOL aircraft, adapted with a hybrid-electric powertrain to extend range, allowing Anduril to draw on production lines and supply chain investment that Archer has already built in the commercial eVTOL sector investors.archer.com. That is a cost-engineering decision, not an environmental one.


The Autonomy Stack

The physical aircraft is the delivery mechanism. The product is the autonomy stack. Thunder operates using Anduril's Lattice for Mission Autonomy software to manage flight formation behaviours and separation from crewed aircraft, eliminating the need for pilot control of the drone and freeing crews to focus on the mission 2 sources.

The command-versus-control distinction is architecturally important. Anduril describes the architecture as making Thunder a "blind participant": the wingman appears to the crewed platform as another known participant on the existing datalink, requiring no hardware modification to the manned aircraft breakingdefense.com. That is a deliberate integration strategy that reduces the barrier to qualification and removes the need for a new cockpit programme on the manned side.

Anduril has stated it has been testing the autonomy software for two years, with flight testing of the physical aircraft planned to begin in 2027 twz.com. Arnott linked the design philosophy directly to the low-altitude operational environment that has re-emerged as the decisive tactical domain: "Maneuver warfare is at a stalemate in the current environment, as we got further and further up and higher and higher, we got comfortable because we own the air" twz.com. That framing maps where the component-level technology debt sits, and where third-party suppliers have an opening.


The European Procurement Environment

Thunder was not unveiled in the United States. It was unveiled at Farnborough, and the European angle is explicit. Brose told reporters that many of the design decisions in Thunder are based on lessons the United States and European allies are drawing from Ukraine, specifically the question of how to bring mass to the battlefield in a tactical environment requiring deep-fight engagement defenseone.com.

The UK has already structured a parallel procurement. BAE Systems, Anduril UK, Portugal's Tekever, and France's Thales were selected for the concept demonstrator effort dubbed Project NYX, funded by the UK MoD to develop drone wingman companions for the Apache breakingdefense.com. The MoD announced a funding package of 10 million pounds for the selected companies 2 sources. All designs are to be evaluated and narrowed before a final partner is chosen later in 2026, with the MoD aiming to have operational Apache drone wingmen ready by 2030 2 sources.

The CCA Production Award Changes the Competitive Context

Anduril did not arrive at Farnborough as a speculative entrant. It arrived as a company that had, four weeks earlier, won one of the most consequential autonomous aircraft contracts in history. Rather than selecting one design over the other, the Air Force ordered both into production four months ahead of schedule 2 sources. The Air Force is planning at least three Increment 1 production lots and has requested 1 billion dollars to fund CCA procurement for fiscal year 2027, complemented by 1.4 billion dollars in CCA development funding militarytimes.com. The service has stated it wants to field 150 CCAs by 2030, and has characterised CCA unit cost at roughly one-third the price of an F-35A 2 sources. The Air Force's Autonomy Government Reference Architecture deliberately separates the software stack from the airframe, allowing autonomous behaviours to be upgraded independently of the physical aircraft on a different cycle flightglobal.com.

That production award gives Anduril's UK and European sales conversations credibility that concept demonstrations alone cannot provide. A customer evaluating Thunder or a Project NYX bid from Anduril UK is now dealing with a company in full-rate production of a fighter-class autonomous aircraft.


The Competitor Field Is Forming Fast

Anduril is not alone in identifying the market gap left by the US Army's retirement of the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior scout helicopter in 2015, and the cancellation of the Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft programme in February 2024 twz.com. Boeing unveiled its Collaborative Transformational Rotorcraft concept at AUSA in Washington in October 2025, designed as an unmanned tiltrotor drone wingman for the Army's helicopter fleet 2 sources. Sikorsky unveiled the S-70UAS U-Hawk on the first day of the AUSA Annual Meeting on 13 October 2025, and also unveiled the Nomad family of vertical-takeoff, runway-independent drones at the same event 2 sources. The competitive field for rotary-wing manned-unmanned teaming is forming across multiple prime contractors simultaneously.


For Founders

The Thunder announcement, read alongside the CCA production award and Project NYX, gives early-stage European defence ventures four clear commercial signals.

The integration layer is the chokepoint. Autonomous wingman systems of this complexity require a broad supply chain spanning advanced sensors, AI and autonomy software, electronic warfare payloads, communications and datalink systems, airframe manufacturing, and integration and test capability. The primes will own the platform and the autonomy stack. The supply chain around those platforms, particularly in sensors, perception, secure datalinks, and edge compute, is where European SMEs have a realistic entry point.

The "blind participant" architecture is a template to study. Anduril's decision to make Thunder appear as a known datalink participant to the crewed aircraft, rather than requiring new cockpit integration, is not just clever engineering. It is a procurement strategy: it eliminates the need for a new military aviation authority certification programme on the manned platform. Ventures building autonomous systems for existing crewed platforms should design to the same constraint. If your system requires a new software load on the crewed platform, your qualification timeline roughly doubles.

Ukraine is the reference customer, not the end market. Arnott linked Thunder's design philosophy directly to lessons from Ukraine, where both sides have adapted rotorcraft tactics to fly low and fast in response to pervasive air defence and loitering munition threats twz.com. Founders building low-altitude perception, terrain-following navigation, or acoustic signature reduction technology have a clear operational narrative to present to NATO procurement offices. The requirement is documented in active combat.

The eVTOL-to-defence crossover is real and accelerating. Arnott described the partnership with Archer as enabling a cost point that is not otherwise achievable, with the intent to field Thunder at scale at a fraction of Apache unit cost 2 sources. European founders working on electric propulsion, rotor management, or hybrid powertrain architectures in civil aviation contexts should recognise that the technology gap between commercial eVTOL and military unmanned platforms is now small enough to bridge within a single product development cycle. That is a dual-use pathway that did not exist at this level of commercial viability until this year.

Timing. Project NYX selects its final partner later in 2026 2 sources. The NATO procurement cycle for manned-unmanned teaming capability is running now.
